Yuck! Who has the dubious honor of having the highest property taxes in the US?
We all like being number 1. It says something good about us; that we have achieved the top. Well, perhaps not always. According to this article in the Wall Street Journal, Westchester County has the dubious honor of having the highest real estate taxes in the nation.
Median taxes stand at $8,404 per year, followed by Hunterdon County NJ and Nassau County NY.
Lets be honest, in Westchester today an $8,400 tax bill is cheap! While some small older homes do pay less, just take a look in Bronxville Village, where property taxes on a large home are typically in the $30k-50k range. Of course it is Bronxville with all the positives that you can think of, but it is still a huge amount of money. Upscale communities like Scarsdale, Chappaqua etc share the same problem.
Our County Executive, Andy Spano maintains that our County Taxes are NOT high. I respectfully suggest that he take a look at the numbers. They do not lie!
